Author: Sarah Sargent
Average review score:

A fun and interesting book to share with others.
I read this book when I was in first grade with the help of my mother. My sister was 4 then and she just listened as we read aloud. We all enjoyed it very much. I made the mistake of trading it off to a friend in 3rd grade and am now sorry.

An excillent book about a pet dragon.
Henry Berg haches an egg, and finds a lizard that turns out to be a dragon with blood that burns to the touch. His monther's boyfriend wants to experiment on it, only to find someone else wants to return the little dragon home to his native land. Great adventure awaits Henry, and those who read about him. Definately a must read. Excillent for the whole family.

Where the South Lost the War: An Analysis of the Fort Henry-Fort Donelson Campaign, February 1862
Published in Hardcover by Stackpole Books (July, 2003)
Author: Kendall D. Gott
Average review score:

Inside the book flap
"For too long one of the Civil War's decisive campaigns has been ignored by historians. In Where the South Lost the War, Kendall Gott tells the story of the Fort Henry-Fort Donelson campaign, the operation that shattered the initial Confederate defense line in the west and enabled Union amphibious forces to thrust deep into the Southern heartland. Gott blends his experiences as a combat veteran with those of a military historian to provide a gripping narration of day-to-day operations. Particulalry relevant are his penetrating analyses of the leaders, their command decisions, and their strengths and weakensses. These elements combine to give the readers a masterful account of the campaign that served as a major milepost on "Unconditional Surrender" Grant's road to Appomattox Court House and the White House" Edwin C. Bearss, Historian Emertius, National Park Service.

Analytical History Done Right
This is a fine piece of old-school history: rich, objective, and thorough. Mr. Gott's writing is excellent and the story is fresh. The book is heavy on content, which I found satisfying, and the absence of leftist mythology and psychobabble is a reminder that there are still good historians out there. (Read McPherson if you want a discussion of Southern "paternalism" or Stonewall Jackon's psychological profile.)

As with most Civil War narratives, the story offers entertainment value in its own right. The collection of personalities includes inept Confederate generals, smarmy politicians and rugged country boys doing the soldiering. The unusual genesis of the Union army's river fleet is explored. Further, the battles followed a fascinating course unforeseen by either side. Fort Henry, for instance, was being abandoned by Confederate forces when it was attacked by Grant and his supporting gunboats. The resulting "defeat" at Henry was caused as much by floodwaters as by Union tactics.

Yet as the title suggests, the real story here is how the battles for Henry and Donelson shaped the events that followed. Gott never releases this theme; indeed, it is woven into his exploration of the battle from the very first page to the last. Gott's perspective as a professional battle historian is reflected in his emphasis on thorough analysis. Again, satisfying. He doesn't miss much. This book is a compelling drama for a reader interested in something deeper than the standard casual treatment of our country's bloodiest war.

White Priory Murders (Library of Crime Classics)
Published in Paperback by International Polygonics, Ltd. (March, 1991)
Author: Carter Dickson
Average review score:

the white priory murders
The author is at the top of his form in this hilarious and puzzling tale involving Sir Henrey Merrivale. Impossible situations, great characters, fast pace. I loved it!

an excellent detective novel
Although published in Carr's (a.k.a. Carter Dickson) early years, this novel is an excellent example of Carr's "impossible" murders and is better written than many of his later ones. In this novel, a woman's dead body was found in a pavilion surrounded by unmarked snow save for the footprints of the one who discovered the body. Despite the fact that the murder was committed after the snow stopped, outgoing footprints were not found, nor was murderer found inside. Carr ingeniously provided 3 explanations for this situation, among which Sir H.M.'s was naturally chosen as final.

While it is not difficult to guess H.M.'s explanation due to its straightforwardness, not until the very end of this novel does one have enough evidence to decide the murderer. Readers are thus ensured not to lose their patience or interests in this well paced detective novel.

However, in this novel of a bloody murder, nowhere does it mention how much blood was found in the supposed murder scene, which is an extremely important matter as readers will later find. I consider it a weakness but easily fixable, so I won't let it mar the book's rating.

William Henry Harrison: Young Tippecanoe
Published in Digital by Patria Press ()
Authors: Howard Peckham and Cathy Morrison
Average review score:

A Great Read
William Henry Harrison, second book in the Young Patriots Series, doesn't disappoint, but makes an excellent read, and both entertains and educates. The illustratins are simply wonderful and truly enhance the story. Geared to the 8 to 12 year old, it's a must on every family bookshelf!

A welcome, highly recommended biography for kids.
William Henry Harrison holds the distinction of being the United States President who delivered the longest inaugural address and served the shortest time (30 days) before he also became the first president to die in office. William Henry Harrison: Young Tippecanoe is a superb biography for young readers ages 8 to 12, written by the late Howard Peckham, and originally published in 1951. Featuring the childhood adventures of our ninth president (including the thrilling rescue of his sister from drowning when he was only seven, and the courageous capture of a British soldier just one year later when he was eight, William Henry Harrison is a welcome, very highly recommended addition to school and community biography collections for children and part of the Patria Press newly designed "Young Patriots" series.

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy Read Four Science Fiction Classics: Foundation: The Psychohistorians/Mimsy Were the Borogoves/the Martian Chronic
Published in Audio Cassette by Caedmon Audio Cassette (December, 1993)
Authors: Isaac Asimov, Henry Kuttner, Ray Bradbury, Robert A. Heinlein, William Shatner, Silhouette, and Leonard Nimoy
Average review score:

A Superb Collection
FOUR SCIENCE FICTION CLASSICS is an exceptional compilation of the absolute best the genre had to offer in the 1940s and 1950s. It is composed of six powerful stories which transcend the decades in which they were written, stirring the heart and mind as powerfully now as when they were first published.

While these stories would shine under any conditions, the narrations of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy actually serve to further energize the prose. I was especially moved by the performance of William Shatner. Despite having been a fan of Star Trek for decades, I was completely unprepared for the depth and the brilliance of his vocal talents. Shatner's clear insight into the stories and their characters radiates with every word and intonation.

I could not more strongly recommend either an audio book or a science fiction collection.

Interesting combination
I only wanted "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" and it did come separate on tape and even on vinyl at one time. It did not hurt to get the rest of the tapes. Foundation: The Psychohistorians is what the Foundation trilogy is all about and the newer foundation books you can read the separate reviews. The Martian Chronicles is ok but I do not want to spend time reviewing this section, as better reviews will be under the book description.

However Mimsy is a different animal. So I will say something about this. It is a small sci-fi story about a formula that allows you into an alternate universe that everyone used to have access to. The problem with getting there is that it requires a different paradigm and a formula. The paradigm requires a mindset that diapers as we get older and the formula is in front of us if we know where to look. An added plus is that it is read to us enthusiastically by William Shatner

The Word for the Wise: Making Scripture the Heart of Your Counseling Ministry
Published in Paperback by Broadman & Holman Publishers (October, 1900)
Authors: Henry, Phd Brandt and Kerry L. Skinner
Average review score:

Gets to the Heart of the Problem
This book is a great book for personal growth as well as a tool for counseling whether you are a layperson or a pastor. It's no-nonsense approach cuts through the "situational ethics" typically applied to relationship problems today. It shows the reader how the application of Biblical Truth can bring about true healing of relationships. Excellent book! I highly recommend it!

Great book! Everyone should read it.
I think every pastor and lay person should read this book. We all have people in our lives we want to help, as well as ourselves, from time to time. Just sympathizing with them is not usually the best for the person. This book gives you answers to give real help.

Words of Freedom: Men of Honor
Published in Audio CD by (01 September, 2002)
Authors: James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry
Average review score:

Real History Lesson
This CD REALLY opened my eyes! The performance of the reader and the power of the music brought the words to life. I FINALLY understood the time & conflict our founding fathers went thru.

I wish they had presented this to me when I was in school! All I can remember was the Boston Tea Party was against taxes & the Constitution was a really successful intellectual experiment.

I've been loaning it to friends & have had trouble getting it back. They love to listen to it while driving, etc. Its very inspiring & uplifting

This is a "must have" for everyone who values freedom.
Words of Freedom: Men of Honor is a gripping dramatic rendering of historic American documents and quotes that timelessly inspires the whole world not just Americans. I would recommend this CD to any student, to any history buff, or even to anyone who has not studied History for years. I hope you find this program as thought provoking, alive, and entertaining, as I have.

A World of Art
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall College Div (June, 1999)
Authors: Henry M. Sayre and Andrew T. Stull
Average review score:

Next Best Thing
If Jantzen's view of art history seems lifeless and distant, Henry Sayre has something to say to you. It's the best survey I've seen in terms of making art accessible and demonstrating a continuing tradition. The CD-ROM is an excellent bonus, especially for readers who have never seen an artist at work. Ever wonder how a print is made? There's a demonstration.

amazing!!
This book is absolutely fabulous! It covers a wide array of art and is very informative! I have actually has a couple of art history classes with him and he is amazing! One of the best professors I've ever had. He knows everything!

The World of Henry Orient
Published in Digital by RosettaBooks, LLC ()
Author: Nora Johnson
Average review score:

Gil and Val Take Manhattan! back in print after many years
Nora Johnson's The World of Henry Orient, first published in 1958 and now happily back in print, is a warm and amusing look at the lives of two New York girls, Marian "Gil" Gilbert and Valerie "Val" Boyd. Their escapades transport them from being dull schoolgirls in uniforms to young adults taking control of Manhattan (or trying to).

Val and Gil become friends at an age when conforming is all important, and they are outside the magic circle until they find each other. They are just old enough to have some independence, to play at being grownups, with the city as their playground. At a Carnegie Hall concert, they see a pianist named Henry Orient, and they become fascinated with him. Henry Orient becomes the focus of their lives. They follow him around Manhattan, observing his routine, his "world," unaware at first that they are observing the pianist bound up in a snarl of romantic liaisons.

Val and Gil learn a lot about themselves in the course of their adventures, discovering a world that offers them much more than the activities of Henry Orient.

Love This Book
The World of Henry Orient is one of the best books I have ever read. Val and Marian, two misfits living in New York City, form a truly touching friendship with each other. The story is well written, and I like the characters, especially Boothy. I can relate well to the whole book, and I think it is wonderful. Preteens, teens, and adults alike will find it an amazing book, one that they will never forget. I reccommend it to all.
